Dance Floor Do-Over

Did you ever think, as an adult, you’d have the chance to go to prom again, or maybe go for the first time? And I don’t mean as a chaperone! Clackamas County Fair & Event Center is hosting its third annual Adult Prom this month, and it’s a night of nostalgia you won’t want to miss, complete with pre-spiked drinks, photo opportunities, a prom king and queen, and all the tunes to take you back in the day!

Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 10 p.m., the Adult Prom will be held, per tradition, on the fairgrounds in the 4-H Hall. “With the building design and the hardwood floors, it’s easy to imagine you’re in a high school gym,” says Catrina Smith, Special Events Manager for the fairgrounds. This year’s theme is “The Glimmering Garden,” so prepare to see the space transformed into an enchanting wonderland of glowing greenery!

The magic of prom night hasn’t changed: getting all dolled up, dancing, making memories — only now, you get to enjoy it as an adult. Daddy-daughter duo DJ Lorenzo and his daughter Madison will be spinning the jams, starting out with all your old favorites and ending with more modern-day melodies and a line-up of high-energy hits that are sure to get you grooving! Take a break from the dance floor to buy a drink from the bar — the event is for 21 and over — and enjoy a tasty selection of free finger foods.

And don’t forget to look your best! Part of the fun of prom is dressing up — the men have been known to wear tuxes and for the ladies, it’s the perfect excuse to buy the snazzy dress you’ve been eyeing. Friends and couples can capture memories in the photo booth, and a local photographer will make an appearance to take photos — just like at prom. They’ll be posted on social media so everyone can cherish the special moments forever.

It just wouldn’t be a prom without a king and queen, and the winners will be crowned, adorned with king and queen sashes, and honored by all as the royalty of the night! The method by which they choose the winner varies from year to year — last time, they held a contest and the final decider was a dance-off. “The winners were a couple who had been together since high school but never made it to their prom — it was pretty special,” Catrina says.

Adult Prom tickets are available online for a discounted price or can be purchased at the door. Last year’s attendance was double the first year, as word of mouth traveled about this fun opportunity to relive your youth. “People love it — they’ve been calling and asking about the theme so they can plan their outfits,” says Catrina. “It’s the perfect night to relax, let loose, and have a great time!”
