One of the season’s most treasured family traditions is on the horizon — the hunt for a holiday tree! And the best news is you don’t have to travel far — there’s a family-owned farm right here in town that offers a stunning selection of trees and a traditional tree farm experience for all ages. Kraft & Son (formerly known as Kraft Farms) has been farming in Canby for well over 100 years, and it’s become a favorite stop at holiday time for the local community and beyond!
Among the first settlers in the Canby area, the Kraft family originally acquired the property off Township Road in 1904. The farm served many purposes, including raising sheep and growing potatoes and loganberries, but when Caleb Kraft’s father took official ownership, they transitioned to Christmas trees. The name “Kraft & Son” is a nod to the farm’s multigenerational history. Nowadays, Caleb owns and operates the farm with his fiancée, Rachel, along with a handful of helpful seasonal workers during the holiday season. They can’t wait to help you discover your perfect Christmas Tree!
Kraft & Son has a plentiful selection of gorgeously groomed Nordmann Firs, a variety that has gained popularity in recent years, which Caleb’s dad foresaw and planted on many acres. “He saw that trend coming — they’re a bit more heat resistant, with sturdier branches, and they retain water well,” Caleb says. They generally keep their needles better than other varieties, making them ideal for bringing indoors. But that’s only the beginning — the farm also grows Douglas Firs, Nobles and a small selection of Grand Firs. The fields are open starting November 20th at 9 a.m., every day except Thanksgiving, until 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Even on Christmas Eve, until about noon, Caleb will be available to make sure no one misses out on the magic of a fresh tree!
Oregon isn’t known for dry winters, and not everyone wants to trek through a muddy field for their tree, so Kraft & Son displays pre-cuts in all shapes and sizes by the red barn, set up on A-frames so you can visualize how they’ll look in your home. Those who want the full tree farm experience can ride with Caleb — weather-proof boots are recommended — on his grandpa’s 1940s tractor and explore acres of majestic evergreen groves. Whatever kind of Christmas tree you’re dreaming of, you’ll find it here, from perfectly round Nobles to Nordmann Firs with wide branches ideal for showcasing big ornaments.
Folks have the option to cut down their chosen tree, or Kraft & Son staff is happy to oblige. The tree is tagged for ease of identification before being hauled to the baling machine (which they decorate with Christmas lights for the season) and loaded for its homebound journey. Kraft & Son has kept their rates consistent to ensure trees are affordable for customers, so u-cut/we-cut Nordmanns and Nobles are priced at $15/foot with a dollar off per foot for the pre-cuts, while u-cut/we-cut Douglas Firs are sold at $10/foot and $8/foot for pre-cut trees. Back at the barn, everyone is invited to relax around a roaring fire and enjoy complimentary cocoa and hot apple cider!
It’s been over fifteen years since the Kraft family began inviting the community to the farm for holiday trees, and seeing families come back every year has been a joyful experience. They’re deeply grateful for all the folks who’ve made them part of their holiday traditions, and they’re excited to welcome you this season. “It’s nice to see the same faces, and I love how first-time customers always seem to come back,” Caleb says. So bundle up, bring the family and make a holiday memory — your beautiful hand-picked tree awaits!
